The ReEnchantment of Learning:
Catholic Education ReImagined
In 2009 Stratford Caldecott the director of the Centre for Faith and Culture in Oxford, wrote Beauty for Truth’s Sake: On the ReEnchantment of Education in which he summarized three foundational points towards this project for the renewal of Catholic learning:
1) Contemporary education tends toward fragmentation and the elimination of meaning, except in the sense of a meaning that we impose by force upon the world.
2) An education for meaning would begin with an attention to form, gestalt, beauty, interiority, relationship, radiance, and purpose. This “re-enchantment” of education would open our eyes to the meaning and beauty of the cosmos and our place in it.
3) Education begins in the family & ends in the Trinity. Praise (of beauty), service (of goodness), and contemplation (of truth) are essential to the full expression of our humanity. The cosmos is liturgical by its very nature.
Caldecott inspired a movement and a number of new educational initiatives have begun that aim for the Re-Enchantment of Education.
Please join us to hear from three educational innovators who are practitioners of ReEnchanted Education and how the reEnchantment of learning is central to the effort to restoring the sacred to Catholic learning.

Daniel Kerr
President & Co-Founder of St. Martin's Academy, Healer of the Imagination
Daniel Kerr is the President and co-founder of Saint Martin’s Academy, a Catholic boarding school for boys in Fort Scott, Kansas, that combines classical academics with a practical work program on a sustainable farm that adjoins the Kerr family property. Based on the educational vision of John Senior, Saint Martin's seeks to "heal the imagination" by connecting boys with what is real. He is also the founder of the The Prairie Troubadour, an annual symposium in honor of his father, Dr. Gerald Kerr. Daniel and his wife Katie and their six children live on his family’s farm.

Peter Searby
Founder of Riverside Club for Adventure & Imagination, Author of Casting Fire
Peter Searby was raised in Northern Virginia during a time before suburbia had encroached too much upon the wild beauty of the region and kids didn't have to go too far to find a landscape for imaginative journeys into the world of Indiana Jones or the Jedi Knights.
Peter's creative mind felt imprisoned in the schools he attended; he was restless, resentful and constantly in trouble. His experiences with education both as a student and later as a teacher, left him driven to craft a platform for education based on adventurous and imaginative learning.
Peter Searby has a creative mind and an educator's heart. The restlessness he felt as a boy, boxed into a desk in a classroom, carried over into adulthood and morphed into a general dissatisfaction with the educational system. And so, in 2013, he co-founded the Riverside Club for Adventure and Imagination in order to help boys in particular, live a more imaginative and adventurous childhood and discover their creative gift.
